Icon Imaging - Photography by Carola
Icon Imaging was formed in 2004 by sisters Carola Rush and Andrea Warrilow. Andrea has since moved on to shinier things (jewellery) whilst I, (Carola) have continued with my first love, which is photography.
I started a relationship with photography when studying for a degree at Bath Academy of Art in Corsham, Wiltshire. That relationship, like many marriages, has had its ups and downs, frustrations, creations, inspirations, revelations etc. It is a life long affair - there will never be a divorce.
After Art School in 1984, I began working at the newly formed Cambridge Darkroom Gallery, an innovative centre for the exhibition of contemporary photographic art. Alongside the exhibitions we ran a diverse education programme for schools, community groups and the general public and it was within this programme that I worked as Education Officer. We embraced the teaching of creative photography, through to exploring issues raised within exhibitions and indeed issues raised by photography itself. I was so fortunate to go from the inspiring and supportive community at art school straight to the inspiring and supporting environment of the Cambridge Darkroom.
However, in 1990 I left England to relocate to the Isle of Man, my husband's home. I knew the Island would not offer me the same level of involvement with the arts, so once here, I took a job as staff photographer for Manx National Heritage. I learnt so much about this beautiful Island whilst in that role. After 13 years as a civil servant working in a museum (a role I never dreamed I would be in) I decided the civil service wasn't really me and left to go freelance. Icon was born...
This site shows some of the work I get involved in on the Island. The site is exclusively Manx, all people, creatures and places were photographed here on the sunny, rainy, windy, foggy, snowy, wonderful Isle of Man.

Portraiture
The old advice, 'never work with children or animals', is something I have enjoyed ignoring. I love working with children and animals and indeed big people too. I particularly like photographing in the studio where there is no environment or background to distract from the beauty of an individual face or a specific interaction between individuals. However, that is not always practical, so a portrait session can be in my studio, in your home or out on location. I can also take a portable studio out on location although a building to put it in helps (I have tried fields but only in tents!).
A portrait session is usually very informal, relaxed and good fun. My studio is tucked away in Sulby (with plenty of parking) where sitters have individual attention without any time constraints. A session can be for an individual or a family group. It can be geared towards images for the family album or for a modelling folio or whatever needs you have. Following a session, images are loaded onto my 'clients' page where only the sitter(s) can access them and choose pictures at their leisure. A session costs £70 and includes either 1 x A3, 2 x A4, 4 x 5x7" or 6 x 6x4" prints. If you are interested in booking or would like to know more please contact me.
Events
I am happy to attend and photograph local private or community events. If you have an event you would like me to attend please call or email me to discuss details. A photo studio at a party can be great fun for kids or adults and is a wonderful way to record all your friends/guests. I am always open to working with an event organiser to come up with the best way to incorporate photography into your occasion.
Commercial
I welcome enquiries from local commercial clients for both photographic and small design jobs. I can provide an integrated photography and design service for leaflets, programmes, business cards, invitations etc. etc. I can provide images for editorial\publication, websites. Please do not hesitate to get in touch to discuss your needs.

To order an image from this site please click on that particular image and then go to the buy tag at the top right of the page and follow on screen instructions. Alternatively, if you do not have a paypal account, you can make a note of the image number(s) and then send me an order and cheque (made payable to Icon Imaging) by post. Please remember to include your name, address, sizes and quantities of which images and a contact number or email incase of any order queries. On this site I have tried to simplify the information given. If you have a photographic requirement which is not covered here please get in touch. I have also simplified my pricing structure and print sizes on offer. I can offer alternative sizes or canvas prints etc. Feel free to ask for a quote. I also provide an image copying, image restoration, insurance documentation and painting reproduction service.
In the past, I have provided a discreet photographic service for less usual requests (such as body images prior to a mastectomy). If you need a sympathetic female photographer for a very personal, sensitive request, feel free to talk to me.
